Greener Pastures Initiative: Restoring Ecosystems in Engaruka

For years, the Engaruka community has faced a persistent challenge: the loss of native green grass due to invasive tree and grass species. This problem has severely affected grazing lands, leaving livestock such as cattle and sheep without adequate food.
In response, ENCO launched the Greener Pastures Initiative, a community-led project aimed at restoring native grasslands and reviving the ecosystem.

Over the course of three days, more than 200 men and women from Engaruka came together to clear 10 acres of land. Over 1,000 invasive tree species were cut down, and the area was replanted with native green grass. Women played a critical role by digging holes and planting the grass, while the men focused on clearing out invasive trees and shrubs. With the rainy season now in full swing, the community is optimistic that the newly planted grass will thrive, providing much-needed pasture for livestock.

“This project means so much to us,” said Natajewo Kidali, a local resident who participated in the initiative. “For years, our cattle have been starving because they cannot eat the invasive grass. Now, we finally have hope for greener pastures.” Sayola, a community elder, added, “This is the first time we have worked together like this as a community. Clearing these invasive trees has not only restored our land but also brought us closer together. It’s a win for the environment and for us as a people.”

The Greener Pastures Initiative has done more than just bring back grazing lands. It has brought the Engaruka community together to work as one, showing how teamwork can solve environmental problems. By cutting down over 1,000 invasive trees and planting native grass, the project is helping to provide food for livestock, which is very important for the lives of pastoralist families. This project shows ENCO’s dedication to helping the environment and supporting the community. By fixing the main causes of land problems, we are creating a better and greener future for Engaruka.
